Virginia to Repeat Sales Tax Holiday, August 3-5, 2018

Congress isn’t alone in offering tax breaks to most U.S. taxpayers this year. Back by popular demand, most states, including Virginia, will offer a sales tax holiday, right before the start of the new school year. In fact, just about all the states offering a sales tax holiday in 2017 are repeating their holidays this year.

Virginia’s three-day sales tax holiday begins Friday, August 3, at 12:01 a.m., and runs through Sunday,
August 5, at 11:59 p.m.

According to the Virginia Department of Taxation, consumers during this time can purchase qualifying school supplies, clothing, footwear, hurricane and emergency preparedness items and Energy Star™ and WaterSense™ products without paying sales tax. This includes qualifying items purchased online, by mail or over the phone.

In addition to the specific items exempted, retailers may also choose to offer other items “tax-free” by paying the sales tax themselves during the holiday.
